Classic eyeliner: a practical application guide for beginners

For everyday eyeliner, start with a line you can apply and adjust comfortably. You can add more definition once you like the first attempt; you do not need to create a dramatic wing in one movement.

This guide is about temporary makeup, not applying products to a newly tattooed eye area.

Practise a restrained upper line

Set up a mirror, good lighting and a stable place to rest your elbow. Have your chosen eyeliner and the remover intended for it ready. Pencil, liquid and gel give different application experiences. Work with one familiar product and follow its directions rather than learning a new formula and a new shape at the same time.

1. Look at the eye open in your usual expression and decide how much line you want visible.
2. Apply small sections along the upper lash line with the product's intended applicator. Join them gradually rather than attempting one long sweep.
3. Check the width before adding more. If one section is thicker, correct that section rather than making the whole line equally thick.
4. Compare the two eyes open. Small placement differences are easier to notice now than after you have added a wing.
5. If you want an outer flick, start short. Check its direction with the eye open and add length only if you prefer the result.

Solve common application problems

The line becomes thick too quickly: use less product and shorter sections. Start again if the amount you have added no longer matches the look you want.

The closed-eye result looks good but disappears when open: assess the line in your ordinary expression. A tutorial's closed-eye photograph is not the only view that matters.

Both wings keep getting longer: stop trying to correct a small difference by extending the other side. Remove the small section that needs correction and return to the shorter shape.

The edge is sharper than you prefer: use a product intended for a blended effect instead of trying to force a crisp liquid line into a different finish.

Clean up using the remover directions and avoid improvised tools or tape around the eyes. For the rest of the eye look, read shadow, liner and mascara together. For describing shape rather than applying makeup, read eye-shape vocabulary.
