Eye makeup tips: blending, liner and mascara without an overcomplicated routine

Choose the part of your eye makeup you want to improve before trying another “hack”. Softer eyeshadow edges, a more even liner and less mascara on the lid are different problems, and each can be approached separately.

Work on one part of the application at a time so you can see what has changed.

A simple three-shade eye

Choose a light base shade, a medium shade and a darker one in a colour family you enjoy. Beige, taupe and brown are useful starting examples, not compulsory colours.

Apply the light shade to the area you want to brighten. Add a little medium shade where you want depth, then soften the boundary with a clean brush. Add the dark shade in a smaller outer area only if you want more contrast. Check with your eyes open before adding more. This is easier to adjust than beginning with a heavy dark layer and trying to blend it away.

A small amount of shimmer in the centre of the lid creates a different emphasis from shimmer everywhere. Try it after the basic shape is in place. Keep the products within their intended application areas.

Coordinate liner and mascara

Start with a thin upper line. If the shadow is already strong, you may prefer less liner; if the shadow is quiet, the line can become the main definition. A pencil gives a different application experience from a gel or liquid product. Practise with one before changing between several.

With mascara, begin with a modest amount and inspect the first coat. More product is not always the answer to a gap or an uneven finish. Let the product's directions guide the application, and avoid improvised eye-area tools. The aim is a look you can repeat without spending the last five minutes undoing it.

Correct one element at a time

If both eyes look different, compare the placement and width of the shadow or line before darkening everything. If an edge is too sharp, soften that edge with a clean brush. If the whole application is heavier than you want, removing it and starting with less can be quicker than covering it with more makeup.
