Cosmetic tattoo certification: questions to ask your artist
A course name or a certificate can be a starting point when choosing a cosmetic tattooist. It should also lead to a useful conversation: what training was completed, which treatments it covered and how that relates to the work you are considering.
Start with the treatment you want, then check the training relevant to it.
Training, a portfolio and hygiene answer different questions
A training record should identify the person, provider, course or qualification and what was completed. Ask whether it relates to brows, lips or eyeliner, rather than assuming a general beauty course covers each one. A short course certificate and a formal qualification may describe different kinds of study; the wording matters.
The portfolio answers another question: what relevant work can you inspect? Look for treatment labels and whether photographs are fresh or healed. A photograph is not a training record, and a certificate does not show the exact style of work you prefer.
Hygiene is a third issue. NSW Health's guidance for tattooing businesses includes sterile equipment, opening sterile packaging just before treatment and registration with the local council. These are business and infection-control requirements, not a claim that a particular course certificate guarantees compliance or a result. Ask how the business explains its hygiene arrangements.
Make the checks manageable
You do not need a dossier on every course an artist has taken. Start with the service you want and clarify any claim that matters to you. If the published description is vague, ask for the actual name and scope. If a provider name is familiar, still check what training is being claimed rather than assuming every course from that provider is identical.
Then compare those records with the conversation: can the artist explain the offered treatment, the early appearance, care and follow-up? Can you ask about previous tattooing without being promised a correction before assessment?
